Owego? Tioga County?

Where in the world is Owego? It's in Tioga County. I decided to write this blog to give a little backround on where I will be living once I'm married. (Owego is also home to our reception site) ;o)

Did You Know?

Fun facts about Tioga County

1. The last remaining Treadway Inn in the national chain of hotels is located in Owego.

2. The largest island in the Susquehanna River in New York State, 110 acres, is in Tioga County.

3. The longest epitaph in the U.S. can be found on a grave in Evergreen Cemetery, Owego.

4. The Jail House Restaurant, formerly a real Jail until 1997, is a historic registered building built in 1910. You can dine in the jail cells, and waited by staff in black holding handcuffs.

5. Owego is the Home of General Henry Martyn Robert, author of the "Roberts Rules of Order."

6. The crackdown of the American Mafia gathering of 1957 occurred in Apalachin, NY where the opening of the movie, "Analyze This" was set.

7. The county courthouse built in 1872 is still used as a courthouse.

8. Tioga County is home of world, national and NYS woodcarvers.
9. The Tioga County Historical Society Museum houses Civil War original photographs by Matthew Brady of Robert E. Lee, Ulysses Simpson Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman and Abraham Lincoln.

10. The largest deer farm in New York State, 3rd largest in the country is located in Candor.
11. The Jail House Choppers, makers of old-fashioned motorcycles, located in the basement of the Jail House Restaurant.

12. Susquehanna means long and crooked river – susque means long & crooked; anna means river.

13. If you've seen movies such as "Braveheart," you've seen one of the many products manufactured in Tioga County. Starfire Swords, Ltd. is located in Spencer, NY and produces sword blades for costume, decoration, and staged combat.

14. Newark Valley is the home of the largest elm tree in New York State. It's girth measures 150" and is 108' high. It is located on...what else? Elm Street.
15. Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor in the world, is located in Owego, NY and is the new contractor for the next generation of Presidential helicopters.
16. Leprino Foods, the world's largest supplier of mozzarella cheese is located in Waverly, NY.

17. The Ti-Ahwaga Players has the proud distinction of being the oldest continually active community theatre group in upstate New York. This distinction is especially impressive when considering the fact that TCP has never had a permanent physical location to call a home until 1996 when they purchased a building, a former food processing plant, and transformed it into a quality 150 seat cabaret style theatre space.
18. Richford is the birthplace of John D. Rockefeller, born in poverty. John also went to school in Owego. He lived in Owego at 2453 Route 17C where in front of the house a historic marker stands.
